On Day 2 of Anime Expo 2016, I decided to cosplay as a genderswapped Banba from the manga/anime series Princess Jellyfish. Here is a side-by-side comparison of the character and my cosplay.
A few notes:
-This was the first time I had cosplayed at Anime Expo in the six years I have attended it.
-I did not match Banba's shoes exactly as she wears gray shoes in the anime but I only had black shoes and did not want to buy a new pair.
-I used my real hair to emulate Banba's afro. I had to vigorously tease it with a paddle brush in order to achieve maximum poofiness.
-Obviously I am quite a bit taller than how Banba appears in the series when standing next to other characters.
-I am standing at a train station in this picture, which is appropriate because Banba is a train otaku. You can see the Los Angeles Convention Center emblazoned with a giant Anime Expo banner over my shoulder. I also flipped the bottom picture horizontally so that it better matched the top picture.
Not one single person at Anime Expo recognized who I was cosplaying, not even the employees at the Kodansha Comics or Funimation booths, who publish the manga and anime series, respectively. I take this as either a sign that Princess Jellyfish is still too obscure a series to be instantly recognizable...or that my cosplay was just bad.
